REDUCING MEDICINAL PLANT RESOURCES
India having two out of 34 biodiversity hot spots of the world, perhaps largest producer of medicinal plants in the world. Of the 43000 plant species, 3000 are known to possess medicinal properties according to Dr.Rajasekaran, Head, Department of Ethnomedicine, JNTBGRI, Palode.
In Siddha also, 700-900 plants are being used for medicinal preparations by the practitioners and drug industries. Out of these 200-250 plants are largely used since these plants become a major ingredient in varieties of formulations. But we are not spending even a second in the sustainability of medicinal plants, instead we are employing destructive harvest method knowingly or unknowingly. In this context, we are going to face a bigger problem that of scarcity of resources. Some plants are at the verge of extinction due to unethical harvesting practices.
WE SHOULD TAKE FIRM STEPS IN CONSERVATION & SUSTAINABLE UTILIZATION OF MEDICINAL PLANTS AT ANY COST.
