ANTIOXIDANT EFFECT OF MADHUMEGA CHOORANAM

Siddha Medicine: An Evidence-Based Medical System

ANTIOXIDANT EFFECT OF MADHUMEGA CHOORANAM
In Diabetes Mellitus, persistent hyperglycemia leads to excessive production of oxygen free radicals, also known as Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS), through the autooxidation of glucose and the glycosylation of proteins. This process ultimately results in oxidative stress, which plays a significant role in the development of vascular complications. These vascular complications are the primary contributors to various forms of diabetic complications.
To prevent these adverse effects, the endogenous (natural) antioxidant defence system of the body comprising enzymatic antioxidants such as superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase, as well as non-enzymatic antioxidants like ascorbic acid, flavonoids, and phenolic compounds etc., needs to be enhanced or supplemented with proven natural antioxidants from herbal sources.
Madhumega Choornam, a well-known anti-diabetic Siddha polyherbal formulation, was evaluated by the investigators for its in vitro antioxidant activity, along with its phenolic content, to assess its free radical scavenging potential. Various in vitro assays, including DPPH radical scavenging activity, reducing power assay, total antioxidant activity, and superoxide radical scavenging activity, were performed and compared with the standard, ascorbic acid by the investigators in this study. The findings of this study validate the use of Madhumega Choornam as a potential antioxidant in the management of diabetes.
Note: Medicines should be taken only under the consultation and prescription of a qualified Siddha physician.
